Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
